Title: A device and a method for providing a ground surface with a tac-tile marking.
THE FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention refers to a device for providing a ground surface with atactile marking according to the pre-characterized portion of claim 1. Fur-thermore, the present invention refers to a method for providing a groundsurface with a tactile marking.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION AND PRIOR ART Tactile markings on or in ground surfaces may be used to provide informa-tion to visually handicapped people. Examples of tactile markings can befound on platforms of train stations, road crossings and shopping centres.
Traditionally, tiles comprising tactile markings have been used for this pur-pose. ln order to put the tiles in the ground surface, a portion of the groundsurface is removed and subsequently replaced by the tiles. This method ofproviding tactile markings on ground surfaces is time consuming. Especiallyin train stations, the trains need to be re-routed when the tiles are put intoplace. The tiles are often made of concrete in order to resist wear by use andweather. This concrete makes the tiles heavy and cumbersome to work with.Further, removal of the ground surface may impair the layer under theground surface. Repairing this layer is time consuming and costly.
Some devices have been developed to provide tactile markings on a groundsurface. Most of these devices provide a coating on the existing ground sur-face by using a heating member to heat the ground surface before coatingthe heated surface with a thermoplastic coating. A roller may be used topress the coating on the ground surface. These markings comprise protru-sions that can be sensed by a person walking on the tactile markings.
JP 2001311110 describes a device comprising a roller, which comprises aperipheral surface extending on the axis of rotation of the roller and which surface comprises recessions corresponding to tactile markings. A pre-manufactured film comprising protrusions that correspond to the recessionsof the roller is provided on the peripheral surface of the roller. A heatingmember then heats the film on the roller, whereafter the film is rolled on theground surface. Another heating member is provided fon/vard of the roller, with respect of the fon/vard direction of the device, to heat the ground surfacebefore rolling the film on the surface. A second roller is provided rean/vards ofthe first roller to press the film on the ground surface.
JP2000352011 also describes a device comprising a roller having recessionsin the peripheral surface of the roller. The recessions are continuously filledwith a coating material and rolled on the ground surface. The ground surfaceis pre-heated by a heating member that is provided fon/vards of the roller. The device also comprises a container to contain the coating material and anozzle connected to the container and configured to spray the material in therecessions in the peripheral surface of the roller. The device further com-prises a transporting member for moving the heating member and the rollerfon/vard along the ground surface.
Unfortunately, the lifetime of tactile markings provided on a ground surface isshort. These markings become damaged by wear of people or cars passing. The markings are also sensitive to weather conditions. These markings needto be replaced regularly in order to continue to provide sufficient informationto visually handicapped individuals.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The object of the present invention is to provide a device and method thatovercomes the problems addressed above. The object is to provide an im-proved device and method for providing a ground surface with tactile mark-ings. Another object is to provide a device and method that provide tactilemarkings in or on a ground surface in a fast and less time consuming man-ner. A further object is to provide a device and method that provide tactilemarkings in an efficient manner. One object is to provide a device andmethod that provides tactile markings in a cost effective manner. Anotherobject is to provide a device and method that provide tactile markings that are able to withstand wear and tear more efficiently. A further object is toprovide a device and method that provide tactile markings without riskingdamaging the surface layer under ground surface.
The object is achieved by the device initially described characterized in thatthe device is configured to permit said moving along the ground surface andthereby firstly to heat the surface layer to said temperature to allow the sur-face layer to be reformed, and secondly to roll the roller over the heated sur-face layer to reform the surface layer using the at least one marking elementto comprise the tactile marking as a permanent reformation of the surfacelayen Due to the permanent reformation of the surface layer, the tactile markingsprovided according to the present invention with the new device are lesssensitive to changing weather conditions. The tactile markings have an im-proved resistance to wear and tear. The tactile markings will thus last longer, which will save costs for replacement. The device is robust and provides tac-tile markings in a simple two step procedure of heating and rolling the sur-face layer. Therefore, the device reduces time and costs for providing aground surface with tactile markings. ln one embodiment, the device further comprises a coating device configuredto coat the tactile marking of the ground surface with a coating after the sur-face layer has been reformed by the roller.
Coating the tactile markings will further improve the visibility of the markings. The coating can be provided immediately after providing the tactile markingsin the ground surface. This will further improve the effectively and efficiencyof the device. ln another embodiment, the coating device comprises a container configuredto contain the coating and at least one nozzle connected to the container andconfigured to spray the coating on the tactile marking, the nozzle being pro-vided on the device rean/vards of the roller with respect to the fon/vard direc-tion.
The coating device may be mounted on the device. No second burner orsecond roller is needed to adhere the coating to the surface layer. This willfurther save time and costs. ln a further embodiment, the coating comprises a thermoplastic paint.
The advantage of thermoplastic material is their relative good resistance towear and tear. ln one embodiment, the transporting member comprises a pair of wheels anda drive motor connected to the wheels to provide said moving along theground surface.
The moving of the device is preferably done in a simple and uncomplicatedmanner using a motor, which drives a pair of wheels in a fon/vard direction. ln another embodiment, the ground surface is heated to a temperature be-tween 35 and 200 °C.
The temperature must be high enough to reform the surface layer. Costs canbe saved by using a temperature slightly above the melting point of the mate-rial of the surface layer. ln a further embodiment, the heating member comprises a bumer providedon the device fon/vards the roller with respect to the fon/vard direction.
A heating member must provide the heat necessary to melt the surface layer.A burner can easily be used for this purpose. Burners are readily availableand can be mounted on the device in an uncomplicated manner. ln yet a further embodiment, the roller has a weight configured to permit saidpermanent reformation of the heated surface layer.
A roller with the appropriate weight will be able to reform the surface layer bysimply rolling and pressing the marking elements against the heated surface. ln yet another embodiment, the at least one marking element comprises aprotrusion extending outwardly from the peripheral surface of the roller.
The heavy roller will press the protrusions on the peripheral surface againstthe heated surface layer such that recessions in the surface layer are pro-vided. By providing tactile markings in a surface layer rather than on the sur-face layer, the resistance of said tactile markings to wear and tear is im-proved compared to tactile markings provided on the ground surface. ln one embodiment, the surface layer comprises asphalt.
Asphalt is used to cover many surfaces. Asphalt is relatively easy to reformby heating and rolling the asphalt.
The object is also achieved by a method for providing a ground surface witha tactile marking, comprising the steps of - heating a surface layer of the ground surface to a temperature that allowsthe surface layer to be reformed using a heating member, - rolling the heated ground surface with a roller comprising a peripheral sur-face extending around an axis of rotation of the roller and at least one mark-ing element comprising a recession or protrusion extending from the periph-eral surface of the roller, and corresponding the tactile marking, and - moving the roller and heating member in a fon/vard direction along theground surface, thereby reforming the heated surface layer using the at leastone marking element to comprise the tactile marking as a permanent refor-mation of the surface layer. ln one embodiment of the method, the method further comprises the step ofcoating the tactile marking of the ground surface with a coating after the sur-face layer has been reformed by the roller. ln another embodiment of the method, the coating comprises a thermoplasticpaint. ln a further embodiment of the method, the temperature of the ground sur-face is heated to a temperature between 35 and 200 °C. ln one embodiment of the method, the surface layer comprises asphalt.
The advantages of this method, as well as the preferred embodimentsthereof, are apparent from the discussion hereinabove with reference to theproposed device.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The present invention is now to be explained more closely by means of em-bodiments, which are disclosed as examples, and with reference to the at-tached drawings.
Fig 1. shows a schematic side view of an embodiment of the invention.Fig 2. shows an embodiment of the roller of the invention.Fig 3. shows a flow diagram illustrating a method of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF VARIOUS EMBODIMENTS OF THEINVENTION Fig 1 shows a device 1, whereby a heating member 2, a roller 3 and a trans-porting member 4 are comprised in a frame 5. Also shown is a pair of wheels6. The device 1 comprises at least one pair of wheels 6, which together withthe roller 3 move the device 1 in a forward direction F. Alternatively, two pairof wheels 6 may be present, whereby, for example, each pair is positionedon either side of the roller 3.
The transporting member 4 is present to move the device 1 along the groundsurface. Examples may be a drive motor connected to the wheels 6. The mo-tor may be driven by fuel or electricity.
The device 1, including among others the transporting member 4, may beoperated by an operating device (not shown) comprising a steering member,a start and stop member and optionally a speed regulator. This operatingdevice may be permanently attached to the device 1 or the frame 5 thereof.Alternatively, the device 1 may be operated from a distance, whereby the operating device is connected to the device 1 by a wired or a wireless con-nection.
The heating member 2 is provided fon/vards of the roller 3 with respect to thefon/vard direction F. The heating member 2 may be any device capable ofheating the surface layer of the ground surface enough to allow the surfaceto be reformed. Generally, this means that the temperature is around, equalto or above the melting point of the material from which the surface layer ismade. For example, if the surface layer comprises asphalt, the heatingmember 2 may raise the temperature slightly above the melting temperatureof asphalt. Examples of suitable temperature ranges may be between 25 and250°C, or 50 and 200°C, or 75 and 250°C, or 150 and 250°C.
The heating member 2 may be a burner. Gas or oil may be used as fuel forthe burner. The fuel may be the same or different as the fuel used for thetransporting member 4. An electrical burner may be used as well. Alterna-tively, infra heating, e.g. electrical infra heating, may be used for heating sur-face layer.
The roller 3 has a peripheral surface that extends around the axis of rotationR of the roller 3. This peripheral surface comprises one, two or more markingelement 7a that corresponds to a tactile marking 7b. The marking element 7amay be a protrusion and/or a recession on the peripheral surface of the roller3. The marking element 7a may be one protrusion extending outwardly fromthe peripheral surface of the roller 3, as exemplified in Fig 2.
Different tactile markings 7b may be provided in the surface layer of theground surface by using marking elements 7a on the peripheral surface ofthe roller 3 having different forms and shapes. Any combination of protru-sions and recessions may be used on the peripheral surface of the roller 3.
The heated ground surface can be reformed by the roller 3 due to the weightof the roller 3. The roller 3 preferably has a weight that allows the element(s)7a to press the material of the surface layer into the shape of the markingelement(s) 7a on the peripheral surface of the roller 3.
Both the weight and the temperature may depend on, for example, the mate-rial of which the surface layer is made, the outside temperature and the typeof marking element used.
A coating may be provided on the tactile marking(s) 7b of the ground surface. For this purpose the device 1 may further comprise a coating device 8. Thiscoating device 8 comprises a container containing the coating material. Thecontainer, or at least the coating material, may have a temperature that isdifferent from the surrounding temperature. For example, some coating ma-terials may need to be kept at a raised temperature to keep the coating mate-rial fluid. The coating device 8 may further comprise a nozzle 9, or sprayinghead, to spray the coating material on the tactile marking 7b. This coatingdevice 8, or at least the nozzle 9, is provided on the device 1 rean/vards ofthe roller 3 with respect to the fon/vards direction F. The coating device 8 maybe operated by the operating device mentioned above.
The coating material may be any material or paint that improves the visibilityof the tactile marking 7b on the ground surface. Preferably, the coating has alight or bright colour such as white or yellow. Fluorescent or othen/vise reflect-ing coating materials may be used as well. The coating material is preferablywear resistant. Therefore, a plastic coating may be used, for example ther-moplastic paint material, such as high performance polyaryletherketones(PEEK polymers coatings), fluoropolymers or polyphenylene sulphide (Ry-ton®).
The present invention also relates to a method for providing a ground surfacewith at least one tactile marking 7b. The device 1 outlined above, or minorvariations of such device 1, may be used in the method described below. Fig3 shows a flow diagram of an embodiment of the method according to theinvenüon.
An optional first step of the method may be cleaning the ground surface (in-dicated by the dotted arrows in Fig 3). For example, the ground surface maybe cleaned by spraying water or blowing air or steam on the surface. Then, the surface layer of the ground surface is heated to a temperature that allowsthe ground surface to be reformed. The temperature will depend on the ma-terial of the surface layer and may be between 25 and 250°C, or 50 and 200°C, or 75 and 250°C, or 150 and 250°C. Asphalt is commonly used as asurface layer on a ground surface.
This heated surface layer is subsequently reformed by rolling the surface with a roller 3 that comprises one or more marking element 7a on the periph- eral surface of the roller 3. The one or more element 7a may be a protrusion, a recession, or a combination of one, two or more protrusion and/or reces- sion, which press the heated surface into the shape of the marking element(s)7a on the peripheral surface of the roller 3. The element(s) 7a may have dif- ferent shapes and forms. ln one embodiment, the roller 3 comprises one, two or three protrusion on the peripheral surface. Preferably, the reformation ofthe ground surface is permanent.
After reformation, the ground surface may be coated by spraying a coatingon the tactile marking 7b of the ground surface. The coating material may beany material or paint that improves the visibility of the tactile marking 7b onthe ground surface.
The tactile marking 7b, and optionally the coating on the tactile marking 7b,will subsequently cool to the temperature of the surroundings, which may bethe outside temperature. The result of the method will be a ground surfacewith one or more (permanent) tactile marking 7b in the surface layer, option-ally coated with a coating material, such as a thermoplastic material.
The device 1 and the method of the present invention are suitable for use inany place, where blind or visual handicapped people need routing guidance. For safety reasons, especially for visual handicapped people, the device 1and method can be used in train and bus stations as well as in shoppingmalls.
